What to Expect on the Great White Way This Year
Comedy…drama…musicals…Shakespeare…Moliere…and Billy Crystal… The 2026-2027 Broadway lineup promises something for just about everyone. Here are some of the potential highlights for live theater in New York this year.
The Season’s Hottest Ticket
Everyone’s anxiously waiting for the opening of Paranormal Activity, which sold out runs in Chicago and London, and begins a 20-week run on September 15 at the August Wilson Theatre. Based on an 8 movie horror film franchise, the production centers on characters not found in the films and offers theatergoers and immersive and unique experience.
The Poignant Side of Billy Crystal
The beloved comedian comes to Broadway with a heartfelt production that uses the loss of his home (of 46 years) to California wildfires in 2025 to reflect on themes of love, loss and resilience.
A Wide Range of Musicals
It should come as no surprise that a significant number of the new productions are musicals, some entirely new and others revivals of beloved classics:
- The Helen Hayes Theatre will open a revival of The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical in theatrical history, on November 1, 2026. This production features a twist on the well-known show, with the young lovers of the same gender.
- Lin-Manuel Miranda returns to the Great White Way with Warriors, the story of street gangs involved in conflict and mistaken identities. Based loosely on an ancient Greek story and a 1979 film, the production changes the gender of the central gang to all female. Find it at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
- Alice in Neverland—Scheduled to come to Broadway after a premiere in Atlanta, this musical blends the worlds of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. Dates and location are yet to be determined.
- Dolly: A True Original Musical—Dolly Parton will bring her own story to New York in 2027, starring in an autobiographical production that features old favorites and new songs.
- Wanted, a new work based on the true story of Martha and Mary Clarke, Black twin farm girls who became outlaws in the old West, previews October 15 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. Books and lyrics are by Angelica Cheri, a descendant of the Clarkes
- Look for new runs of such storied productions as Damn Yankees, The Full Monty, Evita and The Sound of Music
A Taste of the Classics
For fans of the Bard of Avon, there’s a modern dress version of the raucous comedy Much Ado About Nothing, starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell as Benedick and Beatrice. The run is limited, previewing in October, opening on November 19, and doing a final curtain call on January 8.
The Todd Haines Theatre will stage a production of Jean Baptist Poquelin de Moliere’s fabled farce about a wealthy hypochondriac who falls under the spell of a con man. Bill Irwin takes on the role of Argan in The Imaginary Invalid.
