What You Can Expect to See in the Theatres in the New Year

Action movies, games come to life, animated features and classic sequels and remakes—whatever your movie preferences, you’re sure to find cause for excitement from the list of blockbusters projected to hit the silver screen in 2023. Let’s look at a few:

  • Creed III—Michael B. Jordan directs and stars in the latest installment chronicling the story of Apollo Creed, one-time nemesis of Rocky Balboa. It’s scheduled to open at the beginning of March.
  • John Wick: Chapter 4—Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne together again—no, it’s not a sequel to the Matrix trilogy, but the fourth part of the John Wick blockbuster action series…rumor is that it may be the last, as well, with the title character finally meeting his match. It opens in late March.
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves—The most popular role-playing game in history comes to theaters at the end of March, with Chris Pine, Hugh Grant and others.
  • Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—Though it won’t be directed by Steven Spielberg, who created the series and occupied the helm of the previous four Indy Jones epics, Harrison Ford will be back as our favorite archaeologist. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Shaunette Renee Wilson. Look for it in June.
  • Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part One—All the familiar faces will be there, from Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames to Rebecca Ferguson and Simon Pegg. It’s the 7th installment in this series, with Part Two scheduled for 2024. It hits the theaters in July
  • Oppenheimer—It’s being shot in IMAX, so the image may be as big as the bomb. Cillian Murphy plays the title role and Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey and Josh Hartnett co-star. It’s also due in theaters in the summer.
  • Roosevelt—Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as FDR, this one has been in the works for nearly six years. It’s tentatively scheduled for a July release, but don’t hold your breath.
  • The Exorcist—Look for Ellen Burstyn to recreate her starring role some 50 years after the original thriller was made. David Gordon Green, of the Halloween trilogy, is directing. Word is that this will be the first installment of a trilogy as well. Look for it in October
