The Best Way to Maximize the Value of Your Rare Objects

Do you have a prized piece of art? A collection of signed first editions from literary icons? A coin collection, vintage comic books, pristine vinyl records or sports memorabilia? You’d like to sell your collection, but you don’t know how to go about that in a way that maximizes the value to you. What are the most effective ways to sell collectibles or other valuable items?

What Are You Looking to Sell?

The best method will depend in part on what you have to sell. If it’s a single, potentially high-dollar item, you’ll likely be best served by going to a specialty auction house. These vendors typically have contacts who regularly buy or are looking for the specific type of item you are selling.

If you’re looking to unload general vintage or collectible items (but nothing extremely rare or potentially high-dollar), eBay will likely be the best audience. There are currently more than 130 million people worldwide who are regular buyers on eBay, so you’ll have exposure to a large audience.

If you have an extensive collection that would appeal to a wide range of buyers, you may want to consider hiring an estate sale company or an auction service. They will be able to effectively market your items and keep an inventory, but they’ll typically take a percentage of the revenue (anywhere from 25% to 50%).

Finally, if you are simply looking for quick cash, you can either advertise on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace or look for a local dealer.

What Can You Do to Maximize the Value of Your Collectibles?

Before you put your items on the market, you may want to do a little online research to see what others have paid for similar items. eBay allows you to look at “sold” items, as well as asking prices. If it’s a particularly high-end item, you should retain the services of a professional appraiser, someone familiar with the market for your item.

Make certain you have any certificates or documents of provenance or authenticity, take the time to carefully clean up the collectibles (without removing patina or other desirable features) and have professional photos taken for advertising and marketing.
