Beat the Heat with One of These Great Flicks
Meteorologists predict another hot summer. Though it’s typically the time you want to be outside, the heat can take its toll on you. There can be nothing more refreshing that chilling in an air-conditioned movie theater, escaping into the fantasy of film with a cold beverage and some buttered popcorn. There’s good news, too. The Writers Guild strike is long-resolved, so the world’s best screenwriters are back, helping create captivating new cinematic experiences. Here are some of the films expected to top the box office this summer:
- Hit Man—This one sounds like pure fantasy, but is in fact based on a true story. Can you imagine posing as a hit man to see who might hire you? Apparently, a New Orleans college professor did just that, helping local law enforcement officers nail potential perps. Glen Powel (Top Gun: Maverick) stars.
- Watchers—Directed by Ishana Shyamalan (M. Night’s daughter), this thriller follows the family formula—seemingly vulnerable young woman finds herself stuck in really frightening situation in the dark of night. Get a good grip on the edge of your seat!
- Thelma—The summer’s top feel-good/revenge movie tells the story of 93-year-old Thelma Post, played by 94-year-old actress June Squibb, who goes after the scammers who trick her into sending them $10,000 to allegedly bail her grandson out of jail. Thelma and Ben, a friend of her late husband (played by Richard Roundtree), track down the scammers and get her money back.
- Horizon: An American Saga—Supposedly Part I of a tetralogy (a four-part work), this is classic Kevin Costner, a western drama that clocks in at just over three hours. Joining Costner are Giovanni Ribisi, Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller and Danny Huston. The first “chapter” was released on June 28 and Chapter 2 is set to open on August 16. You may be able to spend an entire afternoon in the old west.
- Deadpool and Wolverine—What would the summer be without a Marvel blockbuster? This one pairs Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) for the first time. In the classic action-hero story, Deadpool comes out of a quiet retirement when his home universe faces a deadly threat, joining Wolverine on a mission that will change their lives forever.
