As the school year begins to spark up again, many families are concerned about their children’s safety sending them back into the classroom, especially after half a year of online learning. Going back to learning in person, while practicing safety measures such as wearing a mask, will be a change you might need to explain to kids, so they’re prepared.
Start off by making a plan for the year. Find out what the remote options are for your child’s school, a caregiver incase schools are to shut again, and make sure you have the correct personal protective equipment for your child. Children should already be familiar with the use of masks, but as they will now be wearing them for prolonged periods of time, it might be beneficial to have them wear around the house to get used to. It’s also important for you to review the proper way to wear a mask and a good handwashing technique, such as singing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice while washing. This is also a good time to consult your child’s physician to make sure you are up to date on your child’s vaccinations and healthcare needs. They can help you decide if online schooling is the best option for a child who may be at an increased risk.
Explaining to your child that school will be different now will prepare them to adjust to the new changes. Face coverings and social distancing will more then likely be required for your child’s school. Teach them how to keep a distance and not share food/drinks from common places while at home. It is also important to figure out what kind of mask will work best for your child. A cloth mask is recommended that fits comfortably for the child, this way they do not have to constantly fix the mask. Getting a cloth mask can also allow for a fun pattern or your child’s favorite TV show, encouraging them to want to wear it.
Overall, helping your child understand that we are still learning about the virus and that their safety is the top priority is key. It will help them form a new sense of normal and make transitions much smoother in case of an unexpected closure.
